Russia’s Karen Kachanov is one of the young crop of players snapping at the heels of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.  Aged 23 he is currently ranked No.9 in the world, entering the top 10 for the first time. In 2018 he won three ATP Tour titles in Marseille, Moscow and Paris, where he beat Djokovic in the final.  Standing at 6’6” tall you might not be surprised to hear that he thinks he would be a basketball player if he hadn’t made it as a tennis player.

Karen married his wife Veronika Shkliaeva in 2016 and in a recent interview revealed their embarrassing first meeting: “I have known Veronika since I was eight years old, but I didn't make a good first impression.  We met at the airport. I was playing with a baggage cart and hit her. She told her mother: "What an idiot!"
